Black tea versus green tea

Tea is one of the most popular aromatic beverage used by people worldwide for centuries . It is  prepared by pouring hot or boiling water on the  leaves of the Camellia sinensis, which grows is grown in Asian countries. There are different kinds of tea but we will be looking at the difference between black tea and green tea so you can see the advantages and disadvantages of both.

The difference between how black tea and green tea is made?

 

Black tea is a fully oxidized while green tea has no oxidation during the manufacturing process .

Black tea? manufacturing usually has four stages it is  dried then rolled and third stage it goes through a process of oxidation. During this process is when the tea leaves become black or dark in color .It is during  this oxidation process where black tea loses more of it polyphenols compared to green tea .

Green tea vs black tea  antioxidants

 

Because there’s no oxidation in the manufacturing of green tea the chemistry of the leaf is mostly unchanged so it  retains most of its color flavor and grassy smell. Green tea also has more healthy antioxidants  ,these polyphenols also known as  catechins  (especially EGCGepigallocatechin gallate)  has cardioprotective, neuroprotective, anti-obesity, anti-carcinogenic, anti-diabetic, anti-artherogenic, liver protective and beneficial for blood vessel health.

 

Green tea improves memory for longer period than black tea

 

Newcastle University researchers did a  clinical study using green tea and black tea on Alzheimer suffers  .They found both green teas and black teas inhibited the activity of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE), which breaks down the chemical messenger or neurotransmitter, acetylcholine, and hinders the activity  enzyme butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) which are deposit found in alzheimer patients . Green tea had some advantage over the black tea in that it inhibited enzyme beta-secretase, which affects Alzheimer’s patients ,for a week compared to black tea effect which last a day. Further study needs to be done to find the component in the tea which help to slow the process of Alzheimer memory loss. Source

 

Both green and black tea help to prevent cognitive decline

 

Research was done  in China on community live in elderly aged 55 years or older between the years 2003  to 2005 on tea drinking . Results showed that drinking green, black or oolong tea had great long term benefits on cognitive functions . The compounds in tea such as catechins, theaflavins, thearubigins and L-theanine exhibit bio-active and antioxidant properties that prevent  vascular damage and neurodegeneration. Source  


 

Dental health

Research has found that black tea has more fluoride than green tea therefore it move effective at fighting cavities .Black tea contains between 0.2 and 0.5 milligrams of fluoride per cup, while green tea provides 0.3 to 0.4 milligrams so black teeth is more effective at keeping your teeth health .Both black tea and green tea has compounds that can prevent the growth and acid production of oral bacteria . Researchers   found that compounds in black tea were capable of killing or suppressing growth and acid production of cavity-causing bacteria in dental plaque. When bacteria in your mouth multiple it converts sugar to a sticky material that plaque use to stick to the surface of teeth. Black tea helps to prevent the bacterial enzyme  glucosyltranferase from  converting sugar in your mouth .  

 

Cancer prevention

Studies shows that green tea out ranks black tea in preventing cancer . Green tea has more

EGCG and other antioxidants which promotes skin cancer cell death ,  it prevents the mutation of DNA to prevent lung cancer and colon cancer . Research has indicated smokers who drink tea at least 3 times daily reduces their chances of getting lung cancer compared to those who don’t drink tea.  Smoking-induced carcinogenesis could be modulated by green tea consumption and the growth factor environment.

Reduce stress

Black tea comes out on top when it comes to reducing stress . A study, published in the journal Psychopharmacology, found that persons who drank black tea had  lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol in their blood after a stressful event, compared with a control group who drank the fake or placebo tea for the same period of time. UCL researchers also found that blood platelet activation – linked to blood clotting and the risk of heart attacks – was lower in the tea drinkers, and that this group reported a greater degree of relaxation in the recovery period after the task. Caffeine content

Black tea generally has more caffeine than green tea but this can changes depending on the brand of green tea and how long it was brewed . The longer the tea brews the more caffeine  your cup of tea has , Green Tea has 10-20mg per 1 gram in dried form  compared to Black Tea had 22-28mg per 1 gram dried form . Many persons drink black tea because it keeps them alert because of the caffeine content but green tea has the same effect this is because of the amino acid L-theanine.
