The most accurate and reliable method is spectral analysis, determination of the chemical composition of steel using special instruments. This method requires special equipment and time. External differences between stainless steel and galvanizing can give a quick response. Galvanized steel can have characteristic spots, known to many in the galvanized buckets produced sometime in the USSR, the so-called crystallization pattern (see the figure).
In addition, visually stainless steel usually has a more matte surface than galvanizing , especially if the stainless steel has not been subjected to a clean mirror finish. Galvanized steel without crystallization patterns almost always has a mirror surface, with a barely perceptible bluish tint. A small drop of hydrochloric acid is enough to start a chemical process visible to the naked eye – the surface begins to bubble, the zinc layer gradually disappears.
