Do you know what your suitcase is made of?
If in a previous post we talked about the different sizes of the different suitcases of travel reason for doubt or hesitation when buying a suitcase another question that often arises is what material we buy, rigid or semi-rigid (flexible) and is that if there were different sizes how I would not see different materials.
To shed some light on this topic we will introduce you and tell you about the different manufacturing materials used by the different suitcase manufacturers. If after reading the article there are still doubts we remind you that behind “which suitcase to travel to buy” there is a group of well-trained professionals in the field of travel equipment to help you, so do not hesitate to contact us, we will be delighted to attend you.
The main question that arises about materials is what is seen and touched, which we can see at a glance: rigid or semi-rigid (flexible)
Flexible luggage materials
The flexible bags are the least weight and most affordable price since the products used for their manufacture are more economical. They present a but and it is their least resistance. The flexibility gives them a greater capacity as it allows deformations and bulges of the suitcase that a rigid travel suitcase does not allow. The most used materials for the manufacture of this type of suitcase are polyester and nylon.
Polyester is the material most used in the manufacture of flexible or soft travel cases, it is resistant to moisture and abrasion.
Nylon is the other material used in the type of travel luggage that we are talking about and has the characteristics of being very resistant to abrasion as well as being a very light material. What gives lightness to travel bags made with this material.
Rigid Baggage Material
The panniers are less flexible and more resilient . The greater resistance of its materials gives it a higher price but greater durability. They present an advantage with respect to polyester or nylon and it is their cleaning, they are cleaned very easily. The materials of the rigid suitcases, used in their manufacture are: ABS, POLYPROPYLENE AND POLYCARBONATE.
Here we explain the characteristics of each of them:
- ABS : is a new type of plastic very resistant to impact, hard and with a high resistance to abrasion. It is grated less than other materials and is very light.
- POLYPROPYLENE : It is the material par excellence of manufacture of suitcases, it has a high hardness and resistance to abrasion. It is the heaviest material of the three.
- POLYCARBONATE : it is a very flexible thermoplastic and resistant to impacts and extreme temperatures. It is the lightest material of the three. It is the most used in high-end, exclusive and expensive travel suitcases. As a curiosity we can tell you that the windows of the aircraft are made of this type of material.
Which to choose?
Although both suitcases are resistant to shock, flexible or soft have the disadvantage that if they are hit or treated improperly what is inside can be broken, while hard materials absorb the blows preventing it from breaking what is inside.
As always at the time of choosing we recommend that you stop to think little about the use and treatment .
