Functions of the family: intrinsic, extrinsic, and much more

The family is a very important institution in the life of every human being, one of the main functions of the family is to provide protection and security to children so that they develop efficiently within them.

The family

The family is the first social organization of which the human being is a part. Within this organization is that the individual learns the first lessons of life, as are the values. A family must always provide all members with the confidence and security to express their ideas and openly show their character without feeling pressured or inhibited. It is necessary to establish bonds of love so that all the members are happy because of the relationship they have with the members of their family will depend on their psychological stability.

For the family nucleus to work it is necessary that the roles and functions are clearly established and the norms that are established are efficiently fulfilled. The rules to be fulfilled in the family , in general, are established in function of an efficient communication between all the members where the negotiation intervenes so that everyone feels comfortable and calm.

Respect is one of the main values ??that must be applied within the family nucleus, both parents and all members without distinction of age or sex, and abuses should not be tolerated regardless of the source they come from. It is important to always take into account the value that the family has in all aspects of people’s lives, and give them the respect and importance they deserve.

Intrinsic functions of the family

The family has a series of functions to intervene in the lives of all members and improve their behavior remarkably. All these functions are very important and must be efficiently fulfilled to improve and promote the development and strengthening of these. All the roles assumed by the members of the family must be respected and these in turn bring a series of functions that must be fulfilled so as not to disrupt the order and balance within the family.

Within the functions of the family we get the intrinsic functions, these are all those that try to regulate the behavior of the individual internally, that is to say within the home, it is about strengthening the union between the members and providing security and tranquility. Also part of this is the trust that individuals receive to function freely within the home, as well as express their feelings and ideas without feeling intimidated or pressured in any way.

The home should be a refuge for everyone, a place where they feel safe and protected, never a battlefield or the shelter of problems and conflicts. It is the duty of all members of the family to guarantee the well-being of the members within the home and provide them with all the necessary tools so that they can relate easily in any area and so that their emotional stability is always completely in order.

Among the intrinsic functions of the family we can mention the following:

Affective functions

One of the main functions of the family is the affective, this is what guides and conditions the interaction of all the others. A family before knowing values ??and teachings must be created under an atmosphere of love. Every individual should feel loved and protected by the members of their family, should receive samples of affection, as this will directly influence their way of being and their emotional balance.

Every family must be constituted by love, and it is the function of each member to demonstrate this love. Growing up in a light and emotional atmosphere creates happy individuals with an emotional stability that allows them to develop openly outside the family nucleus. The family must allow all members to openly show their feelings whatever they may be and not feel grief or fear.

Affective functions encompass more than love and affection, it is about expressing and demonstrating feelings, emotions and having a clear and effective communication with all members of the family. Rabies, grief, fear as emotions or simple feelings must be understood and the family must work on how to demonstrate, understand and accept them. Communication also enters into this group and it is really because of the freedom that these people feel to demonstrate their feelings, as well as to express their ideas or opinions.

It is very healthy to develop in a place where you can freely express thoughts or opinions and not feel any pressure, in addition to receiving constant samples of affection and affection is why the affective function of the family is the most important and the that influences more in the psychological development of the individuals.

Protective functions

The home must be the safe haven for every human being, it must be the place where people come when they have a problem, need or need to relieve themselves in some way. Since a person is born, they receive protection mainly from their parents, who give them basic care such as food, clothing, housing, accommodation, among others, since their main function is to protect the life and health of each one of them. the members of the family.

By nature, the human being has always required a time of attention after birth superior to the time needed by other species, and that is where we see the role of the family, taking care of the survival of the newborn until it is able to stand by it also gives security to sick people. The family home is a place where everyone protects each other and everyone must contribute a grain of sand to ensure the welfare of each of them.

It is important to differentiate protection and care with overprotecting a person, because the first is very good and necessary, however, the second becomes very dangerous that could cause damage to the psychological stability and self-esteem of young people. It is necessary to protect all the members of the family, that all cooperate in this care, but always allowing some independence so that each one acts, makes his decisions and assumes the consequences that entail.

Economic functions

Before starting a family it is always important to ask yourself if you have the means to do so, one of the main factors besides stability and emotional maturity is the economic factor since it is well known that the main function of heads of family is meet the economic needs of all members.

It requires constant economic stability to meet basic needs such as food, clothing, medicine, among others. It is for this reason that it is advised that a person before deciding to start a family must prepare both professionally and professionally to be able to easily supply all these needs.

Starting a family will always be an expense, from the moment you buy a house, feed yourself, cover the economic expenses of the young people, among others. In ancient times, men were the only ones in charge of carrying this responsibility, while the ladies only had to take care of the home and children, however, this has changed a lot and nowadays women also collaborate in the family’s economy.

A good economic stability gives the members of the family a higher degree of happiness and we are not talking about luxuries or numerous acquisitions, but the possibility of obtaining what their possibilities demand and allowing them to have a comfortable and dignified life. The parents are in charge of carrying out this function until the children who stay at home reach an age that also allows them to collaborate.

The family as an economic agent

We understand as an economic agent a group or unit that intervenes in the economy of a country, either as producer or consumer. The family is a clear example of this, since it can intervene in the economy in two different ways, in the form of consumers to meet the needs of each of them and they can also establish small or medium-sized companies where they carry out some type of production and generate a small profit both to them and to the national economy.

All members of a family make some contribution to the economy of the country, mostly this is the result of work or consumption, are the main contributors to the economy, however, there are many families who do not have the means to intervene in a manner constant in the economy. For a family to be stable and long-lasting, it must have an economy that meets its needs, thus avoiding many problems among members and internal frustrations for not being able to meet all the needs of family members.

It is important to always maintain the balance between the economy and the family, not letting the problems of one aspect affect or modify the other, but always giving the attention that both require. It must be taken into account that the affective function of the family is very important but they must always maintain economic stability both to benefit them and to maintain the course and balance of the national economy.

Extrinsic functions of the family

It is important to bear in mind that the functions of love and protection that they give to individuals regulate their behavior and give them the necessary tools to function in other areas, it generates security and self-confidence, as well as constant emotional stability. However, the family not only covers this territory, but goes much further, taking this knowledge and teachings to regulate aspects that have to do with their development in front of society.

Extrinsic functions are all those that seek to regulate the behavior of family members in society, the way to integrate it and the impacts they can have on them. Always for the welfare of the family and tranquility in society. Affective functions are only the beginning of the formation of a person, it should promote the application of values ??such as cooperation, coexistence and respect to start a life within the school and social environment.

The family is the first school to which a person belongs and it will depend on the attitudes it takes in their social relationships. That is why it is said that the family is the basis of every society, since there are formed individuals who later start to be part of and will grow society and the training received at home will depend on the attitude and behavior they have .

Educational functions

The family gives the members the basic knowledge as it is their first words, the steps, the way of communicating, they help to forge an identity and a way of being, however, it is important that they also receive the necessary academic attention, so that each parent or head of family must guarantee that it will provide the children with due access to a quality education where they put into practice the acquired knowledge and in turn acquire others that will serve in their development.

It is the function of every family to provide and guarantee the education of children, as well as to intervene and help the understanding and processing of this. Parents must have the financial means to provide everything necessary for the education of young people and be active in their participation and intervention in all that is required. Values ??should continue to be taught, showing how to apply them and it is also necessary to be aware of what children need and can reinforce at home.

Parents must educate their children, showing values, manners, good manners and everything they consider that children should know to face the world and not reap any problems. A child must arrive at school with a large amount of knowledge ready to begin to apply with their teachers and peers, and with the desire and conviction of new knowledge harvests.

Functions of the family at school

Within the educational functions of parents is to allow them and grant children a quality education covering all the needs arising from this, including from the purchase of materials to the commitment to the assistance of young people. Parents should maintain a constant interaction with the school, attending without fail the meetings and events that are cited to promote the interest of young people in the school.

It is well known that children who receive constant interaction from their parents, attend meetings, participate in their classes and other similar aspects, tend to perform more academically than those who have apathetic parents on this subject. It is a function of the parents to stimulate the interest that the children feel for the school, making the homework enjoyable as well as inviting them to tell their day and their anecdotes inside the school.

The education of both parents and part of the school is something mutual, in which both parents and teachers must intervene since one part does not work without the other, but with the right balance can be created good people, with an important amount of values ??learned at home by parents and academically nourished with the necessary knowledge and with the desire to reap many more knowledge.

Recreational functions

Everyone has the right to free recreation and recreation and the family has the function of guaranteeing all family members a free time to do this. It also influences this to provide adequate rest to all members of the family. Just as the family has a duty to provide education and values ??to its members, it must also allow them to be distracted and recreated either at home or at leisure places such as parks.

The house is a safe refuge, since the members inside the house can rest, recover their energies and prepare for a new day, this is why the home must be an environment of peace and tranquility to guarantee this. Young people should be allowed to interact with people their age, participate in a sport of their choice or go for a run to release the energy that accumulates in them, mostly in their teenage years.

Many parents usually make a break every day to regain energy, this is very necessary and speaks of a healthy family, because after a day of study, work should always be replenished. In addition, a family that releases its burdens every so often will be a healthy and happy family. It is not necessary to have high economic resources to carry out this function, since it can be done creating an atmosphere of tranquility and peace within the home.

Reproductive functions

This is one of the functions that has more to do with society, since it directly influences the growth of the population of the nation where this family is established. It is considered as the most important function of the family since it is about bringing a new life to the world and thus allowing the preservation of the human species, many people say that families and marriages have as their only goal to procreate, although this is discussed and objected by several sectors.

The factors that most differ from the reproductive function of the family are those couples who formed their family on the basis of love and values, but do not feel qualified or simply do not want to bring another life to the world, because they believe that they are complete or feel that having a baby can neglect or affect their career or their professional and work life so they decide not to carry out this function of the family.

Many experts have studied and analyzed these types of couples and determine that by not fulfilling one of the fundamental functions of the family, a long-term distortion between the roles and functioning of the family begins to be created, since by not having children or people in charge many of the functions are obsolete which generates an imbalance in the relationship of the family. Although each person is free to choose whether to bring a life or not to the world, the procreative function is still considered the most important in the family.

Functions of the family within society

The human being has always been in need of grouping to survive, this is why the family is born. The family is the first school, which is responsible for training individuals for a proper development within society, this is one of its main functions, giving family members all the bases and tools for them to develop appropriately in the outside world, learn to communicate, express your ideas and be reasonable and respectful people.

The family’s function is to provide the members of this a quality education and a proper time of recreation to release accumulated energy, it must be a safe and loving place for the individual apart from going out into the world with basic knowledge and good use of values have the due mental and emotional stability apart from an adequate self-esteem, which allows him to adequately face the world and be excellent citizens.

The role of the family within society is very broad, since it encompasses everything from reproduction to improve the control of the national population to the behavior of people, many experts consider the family as an essay for what will be the outside world . They also have a significant influence on the national economy, being the main economic agent and guarantors of preserving the culture of the countries.

The family as an instrument of socialization

Every human being from the moment he is born has the need to socialize, to relate to others. The family is the first means used for this function, it is also the most important means since it will be part of our social development throughout our lives, never ceasing to provide us with love, teachings and various values. This is considered the main means of socialization because they are the first people with whom an individual socializes in their first years of life.

Within the family, the first communication codes are learned, as is the use of words, as well as the proper way to do it so that it sounds respectful. It is also important to remember that within the home is the place where each individual forges an independent character and also, taking as a reference the teachings of parents, acquire a good level of self-esteem and security that allows them to face the challenges of everyday life to society.

It is always important to see the family as an extremely useful and important institution both for school development and to facilitate socialization, for this it is always important more than in theories to rely on examples since young people in the home are usually going to adopt the same behaviors of their parents. The family is a means where behaviors are forged, therefore every head of family should try to be a good example so that young people can be guided from there and a change in society begins.

In today’s society

Currently we get a significant imbalance in the roles, behaviors and functions of the members of the family, since with the arrival of the so-called “modernization” many behaviors that were previously considered inappropriate or incorrect have begun to normalize or subtract the importance that they had before

It has begun to delegate functions that were typical of parents to other members of the family and this logically generates an imbalance in the logic of the family community, creating confusions of authority and therefore problems within the family nucleus that could be avoided with a education a little more strict.

It has begun to allow young people certain independence or freedoms that they did not have before and with this the values ??and culture of the countries have been lost or modified. We know that we must always be at the forefront of the changes that are emerging in the world and apply the necessary changes in the family but what was wrong a few years ago today should continue to be and not normalize inappropriate behavior.

Today, the family continues to be the most important social organization, but its powers must be restored to function as such.

Types of family and their functions

There are many types of family, these can be classified according to where they are constituted, the number of members, the type of education they receive, in short, there are many ways to classify a family, however, all obey a function principal which is to provide teachings and values ??to young people and allow them to grow up in an atmosphere of love and tranquility.

When there are no children within the home, the function remains the same, giving and obtaining lessons from the members and creating a healthy environment of peace and tranquility, this would be the main function of a family, also in general terms a family should intervene in all the aspects in which a member of the family nucleus is part can be social, labor, economic and when we talk about intervening it is about helping and collaborating.

Each type of family has a different meaning, therefore they cover different functions within the framework of the teachings that they want to impart within their home, and while they do not represent abuses or pressures, they must be accepted since a family is an authority autonomous within a community, that is, each person is free to implement the rules in their home and the only ones who have the right to argue about them are the same family members.

The functions that each family has according to its type or classification are the following:

Functions of the traditional family

We understand as a traditional family that family made up of the father, the mother and the children, in which the main authoritarian role is carried by the father, who dictates the norms and the support of the family. Generally this is a family that follows the rules to the letter, are strict in their teaching and are faithful conservators of the culture of the country where they live. The children who grow up in this family are serious and responsible people since they usually take the example of the parents.

The functions of the traditional family are well distributed according to the role they play within this nucleus. For example:

The function of the mother is to take care of the children, take them to school, help them with school work and carry out all the domestic activities at home. Sometimes this is considered macho, but the parents do it with the idea of ??protecting the ladies, they do not exert pressure on it, but they allow them to stay at home because they consider it more comfortable. However, some women from these families work in the street, but they usually do it part-time to dedicate time to the home.

The only function of the children is to study and prepare academically, teach them to respect and guide their actions around respect, culture, values ??and religiosity. Mostly these are prepared to inherit the father’s business and become the breadwinner. So they usually follow the same professional career of the father.

The father is the one who has the most important role within these families, their function is to protect the members, to meet all their needs economically and give them all the love and affection they require. They must establish rules always trying to be fair and accepted by all. They also intervene in the housework to help his wife and collaborate in the education of young people.

Functions of the modern family

A modern family is one that is at the forefront of the advances and evolution of society. Within a modern family the rules are a little more flexible and the members have timely access to the technology and the benefits it offers. They are a family with a clear concept of freedom of opinion and freedom to act which makes it a happy family.

The functions of these are quite comfortable and easy to carry out, since the main and most important role of parents is to grant young people freedom to act but to watch closely that this freedom does not exceed the limits of considered correct. The role of children, similar to that of many other families, is to study and prepare academically as well as to respect and make use of values.

Since technology is part of these families, it is the function of all the members to make correct use of it, and not to allow the use of this to reduce the time spent with the family, nor to start generating unnecessary conflicts. It is important that regulations be established regarding the time that will be spent as the use that will be given and parents must be firm regarding restrictions. It is very good to stay at the forefront of technological updates but these should not hinder life and family relationships.

Functions of the biological family

A biological family is one that is united by blood groups, usually by the father, mother and their children. Within this family group the bonds of love and union are represented, and when there are brothers, complicity and friendship. The function of a biological family does not vary much from that of a family that has been created by affective ties or by affinity, it is the educational, recreational and protective function.

A newly married couple will always face the reproductive or biological function, which is to procreate to grow the population. Within these families the bonds of protection are stronger since the children begin to grow up inside the womb of the mother and this provides them with a much more intense type of union than in other cases, these families also develop the so-called sense of belonging, for which they seek to care for their family members at any cost.

A biological family will usually have strong bonds of loyalty and its function is to maintain them, it is the duty of both parents and children to keep the trust alive so that this family has a timely and successful communication.

Functions of the rural family

A rural family is one that we have also heard called the peasant family, they are usually extensive families that can be made up of people united in blood ties such as mother, father, grandparents, uncles and also by bonds of affinity or work. It is what most resembles the families that were formed many years ago and still practice ancient techniques, such as premature marriage and force among young sons of village heads to unite both villages.

These families are settled in the rural parts of the country, and are built around fairly strict rules and an important devotion to culture and religion, in fact, one of its main functions is to ensure that the children of these families have absolute respect for the culture of your country and participate in all the acts that are necessary to preserve this, in addition to respect absolutely the religion they profess within your home and preferably should adopt it as their own.

In addition to these social functions, these rural families have the function of establishing which role each family member occupies, since they are usually quite extensive, it is necessary for each individual to assume a role and the inherent functions and responsibilities of this family. in this way avoid a possible confusion of authorities that can trigger some conflicts. An authority must be established and it is a function of this regulating the behavior of all the members.

The most important function of these families is to encourage the cooperation and participation of all in all the tasks carried out in the home and not stigmatize anyone because of their sex or age since they are all capable.

Other types and functions of the family

There are other types of family that have different functions in order to improve life in the home, an example of this is the single-parent family, which is a family that only has one of the parents in charge of the children, the The function of the father that remains is more difficult since the effort and care must be double in economic and emotional sense, so that the absence is not noticed. Another function is to take care of the children’s mental health by avoiding speaking badly about the absent father or damaging the image they may have of him.

Another family is the homoparental, which is formed by homosexual parents, whose function is to promote tolerance and respect for diversities of all types, although you should try by example and a good education that young people understand this type of family and feel comfortable. It is also a function of the children’s tolerance and respect for their parents’ sexual orientation, but they are totally free to choose the one they consider appropriate.

The dysfunctional family is one that does not have a good functioning, that the competences of each member are in imbalance either because they are not met or because they are abused in compliance. The function of this family is to seek help to try to change and those who feel abused within this area must notify the authorities immediately.

Roles and functions of the family

The role that each person has within the family is known as role, each of the roles of the family have inherent a series of functions that must be performed to improve the functioning of the family, it is important that these roles are determined in advance and be fulfilled during all the time, in addition each person must fulfill only the functions related to their role to avoid confusions and imbalances in the family environment.

All roles within the family are important and require respect. It is totally wrong for one person to usurp the role of another as incompetent or try to take the place of an absent member, for example, in the absence of one of the parents, the remaining parent must do his job but not try to occupy his time the role of the absent father.

Functions of the members of the family

Each one of the roles of the family is in charge of a series of functions that must be fulfilled efficiently in order to maintain a balance in the family and provide happiness to the members. These roles and their functions are:

Conjugal role : this role is made up of couples, that is, parents. Its function is to dictate the rules that must be followed within the home and make decisions that are considered appropriate for the tranquility of all members of the household, which may be related to educational, recreational, labor, economic or health issues. These must have some privacy.

Role of the father: this is the so-called “man of the house” or “family support”. Its function is also to give love and protection to family members, also provide the economic means for these to meet their needs such as dress , food, education. This is the role that has a greater importance within the family.

Role of mother: this is also a very important role, just like that of the father, but in this it intervenes more what we know as maternal instinct, is everything related to communication, emotions, its function is to be the emotional support of all members of the family and contribute to the education of children at home. Although today there are many cases that the mother is also part of the family’s economic support.

Fraternal role: is the role in which all members of the family, whose function is to support, understand and create an atmosphere of unity and tranquility that generates happiness and understanding.

Filial role: is played by children, whose role is to help parents as much as possible, learn, study and prepare for the future and respect the rules that are imposed. They have the right to give their opinion and make the decisions that the parents allow them.

Functions of the brothers

The brothers are the friends that life gives us. It is the longest relationship that a human being has and the experiences that he has with him are with him throughout his life. Within the family a brother would be the perfect company, an excellent ally and accomplice for mischief and the first person to go to when there is a problem or there is some displeasure. The older brother will always be like a father to the younger brothers, they will feel more confident in their company and will come to him for advice.

The complicity that arises between the brothers may be due to the similarity in age, to constant coexistence and to sharing the same parents. A child who grows up with siblings will be noticeably happier and more independent than the one who grows up as an only child. The function of these is very simple, learn together, accompany and be an accomplice. They keep secrets to their brothers, they perform favors and it is much easier to learn when it is done in the company of another person.

In front of the brothers the individual usually shows itself as it is, without having the objections that usually have in front of the parents for fear or shame, these inhibitions do not exist with the brothers and they give the individual a quantity of freedom.

Functions of the family in psychology

The family is the most important social organization in all aspects, one of the aspects that makes a dent is enormously in psychology since the constant coexistence between the family members, added to the treatment and the teachings that they receive from this will forge his character and condition his behavior. That is why it is always advisable to establish bonds of love, union, company, since the behaviors they see from the first moment they begin to grow are those that they would imitate later when they develop in many other areas.

The function of the family is to create a pleasant environment for the individual to feel confident in expressing their ideas without feeling pressured in any way, the objective of this is to strengthen the self-esteem to maintain a constant mental health. It is for this reason that it is so important to keep a close eye on dysfunctional families because the abuse or mistreatment will leave important psychological damage to people.

Communication is a fundamental function of the family and this directly influences psychology, since it gives the individual the ability to express their ideas and thoughts. The family also gives the ability to evolve and adapt to face different situations that life presents them with and have the tools to cope with them.

Functions of the family according to Duvall

The main function that the family is currently facing is to accept evolution and modernity and adapt it to their family groups without them suffering abrupt changes. The functions remain basically the same, caring and respecting each of the members.
